WHY WE EXIST
The best lawyers aren't always running the best businesses.
Excellent lawyers end up running a business nobody trained them to run. The work that decides whether a firm grows sits outside the practice of law, and it lands on whoever has the least time to do it.
Large firms solve this by hiring an entire business function. Most firms cannot justify that. Blackletter exists to give them the same capability without the same overhead.
WHAT WE BELIEVE
Four things we hold to.
The firm stays the firm
Its name, its clients, its licenses, its judgment. We operate the business around all of it and never inside it.
Accountability beats advice
A recommendation is easy to write and easy to ignore. We would rather own the outcome than produce a deck about it.
Technology is a means
Software and AI matter enormously, and only because of what they let a small team do well and repeatedly.
Say the honest thing
Including when we are not the right answer. We would rather pass on the work than oversell it.

THE NAME
Chosen from a standard, not a thesaurus.
Blackletter law is the part of the law nobody argues about anymore. We took the name because that is the standard we want to be held to on the business side of a firm.
And in a firm's name, the ampersand marks the last partner to join. Ours reads as the name that comes after it: the partner who owns the business, so the lawyers can own the law.
